The Texas Longhorns look immensely talented on both sides of the football in 2022. Boasting an offense that I believe to be the most talented in the country. The Longhorns have the ability to put up points with any team in the country. That offense is paced by the best two headed RB monster in college football with Heisman contender Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson. Texas also boasts a wide receiver corps that includes All-American Xavier Worthy. Oh, and they have an immensely talented QB in Quinn Ewers who showed flashes of being great in big games with an electric start versus Alabama before he left the game with a shoulder injury. Speaking of the Alabama game, what I came out of that game most impressed with was the defensive effort and their ability to match physicality with a team the likes of Alabama. If Texas can continue to show up on that side of the ball with the same intensity week in and week out this 2022 Texas Longhorn team has a chance to make a special run.
Coach Sark and his staff have taken massive steps from a preparation and schematic standpoint. Bringing in Gary Patterson (TCU) as a defensive analyst has done wonders from a game planning perspective on that side of the football and it definitely showed in the Alabama game as the defense corralled Bryce Young and the Crimson Tide for just 20 points on the day. It will be interesting to see the growth of this team coming off of a 5-7 campaign in 2021.
Going forward, the schedule breaks right for Texas heading into Big 12 Conference play. Only one set of back-to-back road games in conference play going to Oklahoma State and Kansas State with an open date in between. Facing the annual Red River Rivalry test at the Cotton Bowl against an Oklahoma team that is under new leadership in first-year head coach Brent Venables. Hosting Baylor to close the conference schedule could be a key break in favor of the Longhorns if they can navigate their Big 12 schedule without a blemish going into that showdown.
I expect Texas if they keep winning games to be ranked highly in the first CFP rankings. With a lot of weight being put on their performance against Alabama. I can see a narrative pushed down the stretch of the college football season of, "What if Quinn Ewers didn't get hurt versus Alabama? Would Texas be undefeated?" I think if Texas can continue to stack wins, that becomes the conversation and a trip to the CFP could be in the cards. Only time will tell, but first... the Longhorns need to handle their business each week.
